The Australian Federal Government’s Export Market Development Grant (EMDG) encourages Australian businesses to expand their presence into global markets and achieve sustained international sales growth.
Who is eligible?
EMDG is an eligibility-based, demand-driven program. This means all eligible applicants will receive a grant from the available funds of that round. Lasting for one year, with a possibility of extension subject to the availability of funds, applicants will receive a grant agreement with the grant amount approved to guide their spending.
Funding amounts for Round 4 varied based on the applicant's export experience and strategic objectives:
Tier 1 – Ready to Export: Up to $30,000 per financial year for businesses new to exporting.
Tier 2 – Expanding in Existing Markets: Up to $50,000 per financial year for businesses seeking to expand their marketing activities in current markets.
Tier 3 – Exporting to New Key Markets: Up to $80,000 per financial year for established exporters making a strategic shift into new markets.
Representative Bodies: Up to $50,000 per financial year to support members in achieving export success.
Current Status: Please note that there are currently no rounds open for applications.

With the EMDG, you can claim export related expenditure across multiple categories.
Costs attributed to maintaining one or more overseas representatives who act on a long-term basis (6 months or more) to promote your business in foreign markets. An overseas representative can be a sales representative in a foreign country, an overseas team member or a team member that has relocated overseas.
Eligible expenses can include:
- Salaries
- Advertising
- Marketing
- Communications
- Accommodations
- Travel
- International Office Rent and Office-Related Expenses
Commissions are not eligible.
Costs incurred for engaging independent consultants who provide market research and development services such as social media advertising, PR, market-entry, and more. The consultant may be based locally or internationally, but must not have any affiliation with the applicant
Eligible expenses include:
- Consultant fees
- Advertising or publicity executed on your behalf
- Digital media
- Export planning work including marketing and market research strategies
- Identification of specific target export markets
- Analysis of import market data and trends
- Identifying distribution channels and potential customers
- Analysis of competitors’ performance
- Trade display participation
Costs incurred for any domestic or international marketing visits for promotional purposes (capped at 21 days). Approved promotional purposes include creating, seeking, or increasing demand or opportunities in a foreign market, promoting products sold or intended to be sold as principal.
Eligible expenses include:
- Airfares and Related Costs during the Marketing period
- Return airfares
- Daily allowance of $350 per day for meals, accommodation, ground transport, and incidentials
International components of physical or online marketing aimed at promoting your product, service, or IP internationally.
Eligible expenses include:
- Social media marketing
- Third-party providers
- Website development
- Physical literatures such as billboards
- Brochures, and posters
- Television advertising
- Translation fees
The external costs associated with participation in promotional events such as overseas trade fairs, conferences, in-store promotions, international forums and private exhibitions. The applicant must have incurred costs directly related to displaying or promoting products at events. The expenses can include private or in-store promotional events run by the applicant and do not have to be held outside of Australia.
Eligible expenses include:
- Participation/registration fees
- Costs of stand or booth rental
- Cost of freighting materials
- Producing demonstration or display equipment
- Cost of hiring delegates representing your business at international events
Raw costs & freight expanses of providing free samples for promotional purposes internationally to a person or a business that is not a resident of Australia.
Eligible expenses include:
- Raw costs of free samples outside of Australia for any of the applicant's eligible products
- Cost of freight (air or sea) to send your free samples internationally
- Must be a true representation of the products you are looking to promote (e.g. full size product - not smaller sample size)
- Only eligible if there has not be a purchase made by prospective customer (2 for 1 deal would not be eligible as a free sample)
Costs involved with bringing overseas buyers (individuals or groups) who are interested in purchasing your products, services, or IP to Australia. They must not be residents of Australia and can be existing or potential buyers.
Eligible expenses include:
- Airfares and other transportation
- Accommodation
- Meals
Costs associated with registering and maintaining the registration of Intellectual Property (IP) in a foreign country. This extends to the cost of insurance to protect applicants IP.
Eligible expenses include:
- Obtaining the IP grant or registration
- Extension of the term or period of registration
- Patents and Trademarks outside of Australia
- Associated Legal fees
Costs associated with training your staff on how to market your products, service, or IP internationally. Applicable to Tier 1 – New to Export applicants and representative bodies.
